"Hi Kylie,
Just to say, once again, thank you for your company last night at Gateway CC. A truly inspiring and lovely journey of your black and white photography. As I mentioned to Phil when he asked if it was ok to book you for our Open Comp, my answer was an instant yes and that 'I regarded you as a friend of Gateway CC and you would always be welcome to judge, lecture and indeed join us for any lectures'.
Thanks again for your images, humour and indepth knowledge of your craft!
From myself and all of us at Gateway, thank you once again and hope to 'see' you soon.

"Hi Kylie-Ann
Thank you for a superb presentation at 85 Group Photography last night, sorry that we kept so long with all our questions. It was nice to see so many members asking questions they are usually stuck for words.
Your talk proved you don't have to go to far flung places to get excellent images. They are right on your doorstep if you look.
Hope your health continues to improve and it enables you to carry on with your photographic journey.
Best Regards

I hope that you are well. I really enjoyed your talk on Monday, as did the members. I liked the honesty and openness with which you gave your presentations. You talked about the mistakes you think you have made with your images and the critiques that you have received from the various judges as well as the images that have done well. A lot of our members, myself included, can relate to what you said. It was a good presentation. Thank you. Chris"

"Dear Kylie,
You were a breath of fresh air with a Brummie accent! It was interesting hearing the story of your journey, and your successes over a relatively short time frame. As you said it is strange, what events, conversations and how serendipity can change the direction of your life. For you a very positive direction and life changing to a degree with no immediate end to your Zoom life!
Your commentary was fresh and amusing, because we were muted in the Library, you couldn’t hear the chuckles. It was impressive to hear how you have taught yourself processing skills and how proficient you are now. Your generosity came to the fore, as you described how you send all your ‘models’ copies of the images you made, but you reap the reward in other ways, and it must give you the ‘warm and fuzzy feeling’
On behalf of our Chairman, myself, President, Committee and Members thank you for Virtually visiting us at FCC again and for the time you gave to presenting you talk to us. Hope the sun shines for you on your dog walks.
Kind Regards,
Melanie

Well done to you for developing your photography skills, and for your courage over adversity. Quite inspiring. I've pastored a number of people with fibromyalgia and polymyalgia over the years and know just how tough that can be.
You have a really `bonny' disposition and a wonderful smile, great for communication

Thank you so much for your wonderful talk last night, I think everyone was impressed with how you refused to let your health problems get you down and how creative you are. You certainly showed a great variety of pictures which resonated with different people as different genres and I think we all went away with a few ideas, especially on how to beat the judges!
Best Wishes

Thank you so much for coming to Chapel Camera Club and sharing your mono journey with us. I really enjoyed hearing about your commitment to photography despite the challenges you face in life. I think your generous spirit and humour shone out! One of our club members left the following comment on our FB page:
Great to see someone fighting adversity and gaining pleasure and personal fulfilment from photography. It showed how she had improved in all respects from those early struggles.
...it showed us all never give up and you can work around seemingly adverse situations. Well done Kylie.
Your talk was well timed as we are now trying to get our monochrome entries together for our next club competition, closing date next week, so we should all now have lots of good ideas. Thank you.

"Good Evening Kylie,
First, Thank you for an entertaining and inspirational evening, I have spoken to a number of our members and all are keen to follow up on the techniques you shared with us.
Your treatment of the re-enactment photographs gave them "real life”, both in composition and your processing of the image, additionally your use of special effects software opens many doors for us all to be more creative.
I look forward to seeing our members interpretation over the coming weeks.
As you pointed out and we all hear it that the opinion of the judge is their personal interpretation and opinions vary and sometimes you have to follow your “gut feeling” and do your own thing from time to time. A point you proved a number of times.
Thank you also fo the “crib sheet” I will share it with the group.
We are located in East Devon about 5~6 miles from the sea, we meet on a Tuesday so if you are on holiday in the region, please get in touch, we’d love to see you in person.
Thank you again for a great evening.

The wide variety of genre and types of images held our interest all the way through. You have taught yourself some fine techniques and thanks for sharing the information about programmes and plug-ins etc. I personally found them most valuable.

"Huge thanks for spending your evening with us at Ilkley CC tonight - and especially for agreeing to help us out at short notice. We really appreciated that. Loved your talk and your images. It was fascinating to hear of your journey as a photographer, and what you have had to work through and overcome even to get out to take photos. After the experience of lockdown, I think a lot of us would agree with you that photography can be a life-saver in terms of our mental health. For me personally, it's been really important in keeping sane and focused ('scuse the pun!) during what has been a testing time for us all. I've often only gone out with my phone but even so, enjoying taking and then processing images has been a great help in keeping positive and hopeful.
You had some interesting points to make about camera clubs and judging and so on too. I totally agree that we need to be fair and friendly to other people. As you said, it gets you a long way and everyone needs encouragement and thanks - photographers, models, re-enactors and just folk you meet when out and about. As a club we're moving away from being 'competitive' (though we still have competitions) and towards being even more supportive and encouraging of people at all stages of our photographic journey, whether skilled or complete beginners. We've started some smaller 'special interest groups' too, the idea being that people can get a lot from being part of a friendly, supportive and inspirational small group within the bigger club. We've had a lot more women join us lately, which can't just be coincidence. It was great that your approach chimed in with what we are trying to do overall.
Thanks again. We really enjoyed the evening.
With best wishes for the future.
Andrée

Cymru Mono Camera Club - Last year I judged the Mini Mono for Gareth Martin. He later asked me to produce a mono lecture for Cymru Mono CC. This was created and presented to them on 18th January. The lecture was well received, so I will present it to other clubs in the future. |
"On Monday 18 January 2021, Cymru Mono welcomed Kylie-ann Martin to Zoom present a new mono talk to its members.
It was a joyous journey of delight, consisting of early work, right up to Kylie’s present award winning images, all coupled with appropriate fact and interesting anecdotal stories.
The images demonstrated the photographers ‘seeing eye’, both in terms of content, also coupled with considered composition. What was very evident throughout the presentation was a developing style, particularly regarding tonality, contrast and very dark blacks within the images.
We were blessed throughout the presentation with Kylie’s warm wit, charm, effervescence and infectious enthusiasm. This was all complimented with passion and commitment, also a refreshing honesty. Kylie referred to one her images that “makes me smile”. What a great attitude that we should all aspire to in our own photography.
It was an enjoyable, lovely and informative evening, a presentation to be recommended to all mono enthusiasts.
